Why McCain Won Article →
dearworld: This article pretty much is saying that if Obama loses next Tuesday, it is because Americans are racist.  It goes through, state by state, and explains what a McCain victory could be attributed to.  Not every reason is because of racism, but that is the overwhelming idea. I’m just curious- do people agree?  If McCain wins on election day, is it because too many Americans are still...

Was Robin Hood the Ultimate Liberal or the... →
It’s commonly-accepted wisdom that Robin Hood was a liberal. After all, he robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. Interestingly however, that money that Robin Hood redistributed was actually tax revenue wrung from the people through over-taxation, and he was stealing it from the government and giving it back to the taxpayers. Robin Hood was also for small government and the right to...

fiftywords: He dreamed foolishly of something he could never have. They were together, talking into the night, arguing about silly things, looking at stars through his moon roof. When he awoke he was sleep-stained with impossible ideas, with the potential of something that couldn’t be, but it wasn’t his fault.

Apple blows away estimates
Apple (AAPL) just reported a stellar quarter, handily beating both their own guidance and Wall Street estimates. The biggest, boldest number - 6,892,000 iPhone sold this quarter - more than the number of Blackberrys sold by RIM. The below quote by Steve Jobs pretty much sums up the quarter: “Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a spectacular performance by the...

– Thomas Sowell — Read this with regard to all the new “windfall” taxes being proposed on oil companies. What do you think these new taxes will do to oil prices? The answer is raise them, as the increased costs are passed on to the consumer.

shorterexcerpts: sarahsaturday: I want an epic romance. I want to feel my soul on fire. I want romance turned love that transcends everything beautiful in this universe and I want it to last and I want to wake up naked and tangled in the bedsheets and read books and drink coffee in bed on sunday mornings. I may be cynical, but I believe in this. eend vent. Oh, that is easy to believe...

You Never Give Me Your Money →
jeffmiller: The rich are only rich because they sell people things that people value more than money.  If you’re so upset that the rich have so much money, stop giving them your money.  Just stop trading with them.  Instead, buy things from poor people.  Right now, you’re enabling all these rich people.  Don’t be an enabler.  If we all band together, we can teach these rich people to stop making...

Just stop paying your mortgage →
This is the problem with McCain’s plan of “buying up” and refinancing delinquent mortgages. It completely removes the incentive for anyone to pay their mortgage. Why would I pay if by not paying, the government comes in and reduces my interest AND principal? Dumbest plan ever. It’s moral hazard on a macro scale, for every citizen.

Here’s the gist of the story from CNN…young Jew boy imprisoned in a Nazi death camp falls in love with a German girl who risks her life by feeding him apples that she tosses over the camp fence on a daily basis for months.  Eventually, he is moved to another concentration camp, but survives until the war’s end. Once freed, he moves to America. Fast forward more than a decade later and these same...

Pay the Taxpayers a Dividend! →
Despite all the rhetoric about protecting taxpayers who are paying for this massive government bailout of the banking system, not one of the measures proposed so far does anything to secure a profit for taxpayers. The government’s revenues may increase but that will just be spent by the government. There’s only one way to really protect the taxpayers-pay us a dividend. The ...

What you're not reading in the financial press
Sure, you’ve read plenty about the stock market completely disintegrating, but there’s much worse going on that you’re not reading about. You all remember Lehman Brothers, the once venerable investment bank that declared bankruptcy several weeks ago. You may also have heard about credit default swaps - a form of insurance that investors buy to protect them against exactly what...

Iceland teeters on the brink of bankruptcy (yes,... →
Well, it could be a hell of a lot worse. Iceland has had to nationalize its second (Landsbanki) and third (Glitnir) largest banks, and the largest (Kaupthing) is teetering on the edge. The magnitude of the losses dwarfs the entire country’s economy. It’s currency has lost nearly half its value. “The country’s top four banks now hold foreign liabilities in excess of $100...
